Work Experience & Mission Bluebirds offers a warm and welcoming environment for a team of people who are gaining work experience or have an indication for day programs, participation, or sheltered employment in various areas — in our lunchroom, kitchen, shop, studio, facilities service, webshop, and administrative roles. There is plenty of room for personal growth and development, and as a team, we support and strengthen one another. Within Bluebirds, there’s ample opportunity to build social connections and to develop or maintain skills. People with backgrounds in intellectual disability care (VG) and mental health care (GGZ) are welcome — for example, those who are chronically ill, distanced from the job market, experiencing social isolation, or recovering from burnout. We also welcome people seeking connection or a positive place to recharge. Iedereen moet kunnen meedoen: jong of oud, man of vrouw, met beperking of zonder. Meedoen geeft dag- en weekstructuur en het zorgt voor ontmoeting. Participatie zorgt voor meer eigenwaarde en minder gevoelens van stress en eenzaamheid, en heeft een positief effect op iemands gezondheid. Participatie geeft zin en inhoud aan het leven. Voor mensen met lichamelijke, psychische of verstandelijke beperkingen is meedoen minder vanzelfsprekend dan voor mensen zonder beperking.
Dagbestedingtrajecten
Stichting Bluebirds biedt dagbesteding aan mensen die om wat voor reden dan ook tijdelijk geen aansluiting hebben in het maatschappelijk leven. Hiervoor wordt middels een keukentafel gesprek beoordeeld of er op maat een dagbesteding indicatie kan worden afgegeven met als doel;
- Verbeteren van de kwaliteit van leven bij mensen die hulp nodig hebben bij dagelijkse activiteiten.
- Ondersteuning bieden aan mantelzorgers.

Na een muzikale carrière startte Claire in 2014 Bluebirds in the Backyard. Lifestyle markets, fotografie, styling en een webshop met de liefde voor vintage en muziek in de hoofdrol. Over de eigenaresse
Claire woont met kinderen Matthew en Willow in een oud dijkhuis in Dordrecht. Interview met de eigenaresse door de "Paradijsvogelschrijft"
Na vele fijne gesprekken met ondernemers te hebben gevoerd, is mij één ding wel duidelijk. Ze beschikken allemaal over een groot doorzettingsvermogen. Om te ondernemen heb je namelijk het lef nodig om je dromen na te durven jagen, wetende dat het met vallen en opstaan zal gaan. Voor Claire - eigenaresse van Bluebirds in de Backyard - is dat niet anders. Gelukkig gelooft ze heel erg in ‘ik heb het nog nooit gedaan, dus ik denk dat ik het wel kan’. Door deze insteek durfde Claire de afgelopen jaren haar creatieve talenten de ruimte te gegeven en heeft ze veel ervaring opgedaan. Vandaag de dag komen haar passies bijeen in haar onderneming, waar ze naast haar liefde voor mooie, duurzame spullen, styling en (plantbased) lekkers, ook haar zorg-hart op kan halen. Bij Bluebirds in de Backyard biedt ze sinds een aantal jaar ruimte aan diverse participatieplekken, voor mensen met een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt. Of zoals Claire het liever noemt, ‘een plek waar ze zich thuis mogen voelen’.
De liefde voor vintage spullen gaat terug naar haar kindertijd, waar ze ieder weekend als jong meisje samen met haar moeder rommelmarkten afstruinde. Niet heel vreemd dus, dat Claire vele jaren terug startte met een webshop en daarnaast af en toe een yardsale organiseerde. Gewoon in haar eigen achtertuin, in de binnenstad van Dordrecht. En laat ik hier nou een paar keer zijn geweest! Nog steeds staan er bij mij thuis meerdere mooie items, die hier vandaan komen. Kleine feestjes op de zondagmiddag, zo herinner ik ze. Inmiddels zijn deze yardsales verleden tijd, maar Bluebirds in the Backyard is vandaag de dag niet meer weg te denken uit de Dordtse binnenstad.
Hoe is Claire van verkoop in de achtertuin naar een winkelpand en horecapand gegaan? En waar komt haar liefde voor de zorg vandaan? Ik wilde er meer van weten en sprak met Claire af. Today, her passions converge in her business, where she combines a love for beautiful, sustainable items, styling, and plant-based delights with her heart for care and social impact. For several years now, Bluebirds in the Backyard has offered various participation opportunities for people who are distanced from the job market — or as Claire prefers to call it, “a place where they can feel at home.” Her love for vintage items traces back to childhood weekends spent scouring flea markets with her mother. It’s no surprise, then, that years ago she started a webshop and occasionally organized yard sales — right in her own backyard in the center of Dordrecht. I, for one, have been to a few of them! I still have several beautiful items at home from those days. They were like little Sunday afternoon celebrations. While those yard sales are a thing of the past, Bluebirds in the Backyard has become an essential part of Dordrecht’s city center. How did Claire go from selling in her backyard to opening a shop and café? And where did her love for care and social impact come from? To find out, I met Claire on a sunny autumn morning. Over coffee, she shared her story — a tale of a creative multitasker with a big heart for others.

Zo kwam ik op het idee om een yardsale te organiseren, waarbij er ook lekker gejamd kon worden.”

Through crowdfunding, I managed to acquire an oldtimer bus, which I used to appear at events like the Swan Market (a pop-up market, which at the time also took place in Dordrecht at Beverwijcksplein) and I started being featured in magazines more often. What do you value most in your work? "I really believe in making other people happy. When I started Bluebirds, I wanted to create a feel-good place for everyone who walked in. A place where I could style the space, sell beautiful items, and offer an experience. But a shift happened, especially during the lockdowns. Today, Bluebirds has about 50 staff members, including people with participation placements here. It’s no longer just about me. I now see this business — and this may sound dramatic — as a form of mission work. During the lockdowns, when we lost our terrace, I often walked home in tears. I could have given up a hundred times, but that felt like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Even when we built up rental debt, I kept thinking, ‘I can’t give up,’ especially for all the wonderful people who work here. Did you feel responsible for them? "Absolutely. But I also feel so much love. A client told me just last week that this place means a lot to her. She has no social contacts and otherwise would really fall into a hole. She said, ‘This is the only thing I have.’ That’s why I love this work. When I was a teenager, I would have loved a place like this, but it didn’t exist. Now I can give that to others."Waar word je nou het gelukkigst van in je werk?
Claire moet even nadenken. “Misschien wel van de afwisseling. Ik ben altijd wel bezig met wat meer balans aan te brengen. Zo wil ik graag een team aan begeleiders bij Bluebirds creëren, zodat ik op termijn een klein stapje terug kan doen en ik met mijn kinderen kan zijn met meer energie. Graag wil ik ook weer muziek maken, want daar word ik intens gelukkig van. Dat mis ik nu wel een beetje. Er ligt trouwens al 4 jaar een album op de plank. Het zou wel heel leuk zijn als ik daar nog wat mee kan doen.” Claire moet lachen. “Maar voor nu word ik heel blij van de afwisseling. Of ik nu horeca aan het draaien ben, het contact met de mensen, inkoop of styling.. Ik geniet voornamelijk van de groei die ik hier zie. En dan bedoel ik niet de groei van de horeca of de winkel, maar hoe we groeien met elkaar als team. Samen creëren we deze plek. Je komt als gast binnen voor een totaalbeleving, maar ook achter de schermen zit het goed in elkaar. Perfect zal ik nooit zijn, maar ik probeer wel te kijken wat er binnen mijn cirkel van invloed mogelijk is. Voor de winkel wil ik graag duurzame(re) producten, maar ook in het restaurant gaan we hiermee aan de slag. We hebben een plantbased menu ontwikkeld de afgelopen jaren; iets wat ikzelf als vegetariër heel fijn vindt. Daarnaast vind ik het prettig dat ik van iedereen die hier werkt, zijn of haar verhaal kan vertellen. Ik ben zo trots op al deze mensen. Dat is echt goud waard. Buebirds is veel meer dan alleen leuke horeca of winkel. We horen regelmatig van gasten dat ze genieten van de fijne sfeer en dat ze vinden dat wij zo lief met elkaar om gaan. Laten we met elkaar de wereld een beetje mooier maken.”
